The 5 must-have Brian Eno albums for relaxation

As Brian Eno invented ambient music we thought it would be a good idea to list our favourite five albums for relaxation.

1 Music for Airports
In 1st place is the LP that started the ambient phase of music for many of the followers. Music for Airports was the first of four releases of the Ambient series on EG called Ambient Music Volume 1. This four track legendary album has two tracks with minimal vocals on tape loops running at different speeds to collide with each other in a harmonic and gentle way. While the other tracks have piano melodies on tape loops of different lengths. Each track has similar sound pattern but equally very distinct. You can’t fail to relax with this album. Eno conceived the idea of these peices while stuck at Cologne Bonn Airport in Germany.

2 Plateaux of Mirror
Plateaux of Mirror is an Eno collaboration with US pianist Harold Budd. Here wre are treated to 10 lovely tracks of piano and ambience form a brilliant partnership. The Album is the second volume of of the Ambient Music series

3 Music for Films
Music for Films  is a classic album with some beautiful tracks, bringing all types of ambient relaxation possibilities. More varied than Eno’s Ambient Music series providing a more pleasurable selection to choose from. Some of the tracks are faster and more rhythmic but there are also some classic soundscapes to drift off to.

4 Discreet Music
Eno collaborated with Robert Fripp on No Pussyfooting in 1973. This was minimal music but it was two years later where Eno took stages further into the ambient genre releasing Discreet Music. This was the first true ambient release. On the obscure label, it was relatively obscure release and didn’t sell like Music for Airports but paved the way for such releases a few years later. Discreet Music is a calming album that uses tape loops to generate the music on side one, while side two has slowed down versions of Pachelbel’s Canon.

5 On Land
On Land adds elements of nature into the what’s now becoming a familiar Eno style. Less meditative but highly relaxing collection of tracks.

Well that’s our choice. We love most of Brian Eno’s albums but many are more pop or rock based so didn’t need including here.

Let us know what you think. List your top five Brian Eno albums below.
