Usually there will be a light to indicate that an hour has passed, or the tank water may vibrate as the filters start to self-clean. It isn’t recommended to spend more than an hour inside and this is seen as the ideal length of time.

* It’s an excellent idea to spray some liquid skin or liquid bandage onto any cuts or abrasions. This is because the salt water will sting rather intensely for some minutes if there is any broken skin, so even shaving nicks should be considered.

* It is a courtesy to take a shower and wash your hair. Conditioner shouldn’t be applied and the entire body should be washed and rinsed before floating. This prevents unnecessary pollution of the water in the tank.

* For those who have a specific issue on their mind, it’s suggested that focusing on it while preparing for a session is beneficial. As soon as the body hits the water, asking for universal guidance towards finding a resolution is usually very effective.

Precautions to remember when in the tank are:

* It is pitch black when the lid of the tank is closed and it’s not uncommon for someone to initially panic when the doors appear to be stuck. Anyone attempting floatation therapy for the first time needs to remind themselves that they are safe and calm. The doors are designed so they can not be locked or stuck and there is always plenty of air. Any problems will only be related to locating the doors and that is not so hard to do as long as calmness is maintained. It is sometimes a good idea to find the light switch first and then find the door. If panic does start to set in the best solution is to lie back in the water, breathe, relax and then look again for the lid.

* If salt water does make its way into the eyes it can sting very badly. This is because the salt concentration is so high, so it’s important to remember these points:

- As soon as the hands become wet they must be kept off the face and eyes.

- Any time the hands are raised over the head for a change of position, they should go outside the head, not over the face. This avoids water dripping into the eyes.

- The hair needs to be carefully pushed away from the face anytime the floating position is changed and especially when sitting up.

- In case water does get in the eyes, there should always be a towel near the door of the tank for immediate use.

It only takes a single floatation therapy session to fall in love with the feeling. It provides a natural pathway to health and wellbeing and is a wonderful feeling everyone should experience.

Meditation And The Brain

Is it possible to teach yourself to be more compassionate? A study whose results came out in 2008 makes just that seem possible. The research was done at University of Wisconsin-Madison. This study employed functional magnetic resonance imaging. This imaging suggested that emotions like compassion could be learned.

The scans showed that the brain circuits that detect emotion were extensively increased in people that had meditated for many years. The director of the study, Richard Davidson, said that basically everyone could find meditation useful for depression, to stop being a bully or for other emotional reasons. Davidson is a professor of psychiatry and psychology.

The researchers have a continuing study going on of some Tibetan monks and lay adherents and this particular researcher is an arm of that work. The people studied have to have at least 10,000 hours of meditation practice under their belts. This particular study included 16 monks that have developed compassion meditation practices. It also involved 16 controls that learned compassion meditation for two weeks prior to the study.

They requested that the controls focus on feeling compassion for their loved ones. When they had gained a little practice they asked them to cultivate the feeling of compassion towards people in general. The scans showed an increase in the activity of the insula, which is part of the frontal brain that is important in detecting feelings. It helps to map the body’s reaction to feelings like blood pressure and heart rate.
In 2006 researchers at Harvard, Yale and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology discovered the initial evidence that meditation can change the brain’s structure. They did brain scans that showed that the part of the brain that handles attention, focusing, and sensory input was larger than normal in meditators with a lot of experience.

One part of the gray matter that was thicker was in a section where it becomes thinner with aging, but it was thicker in the older meditators. Sara Lazar, the studies leader stated, “Our data suggest that meditation practice can promote cortical plasticity in adults in areas important for cognitive and emotional processing and well-being.” (Harvard Gazette, William J. It is interesting to not that she said “These findings are consistent with other studies that demonstrated increased thickness of music areas in the brains of musicians, and visual and motor areas in the brains of jugglers. In other words, the structure of an adult brain can change in response to repeated practice.” (Harvard Gazette, William J. Cromie)
The comparison was made between 20 seasoned meditators and 15 people that didn’t meditate. Some of the mediators had practiced for years and others only about a year.

It is amazing to find that the brain actually increases gray matter when people meditate, especially for decades. It is also fascinating to learn that brain activity increases when people are concentrating on compassion, but more so that compassion can be cultivated.

We are just starting to understand what meditation can do and how adaptable to the brain is and the wonders of the brain and meditation are yet to be fully discovered.

Different Styles of Meditation
Nothing is impervious to change and so is not meditation. While the fundamental focus of Meditation has not shifted from what it had started with, there have been several other changes that have led to different styles being followed at different places of the earth over different periods. It helps to know what styles are in practice today so that you can make an informed choice when you plan to undertake meditation yourself.

Watching Your Breathing
One of the very basic forms of meditation is to just control the way you breathe. All you are supposed to do is to sit in an upright position, close your eyes and just concentrate on the way you breathe. While this sounds pretty simple and is actually not that hard to practice, it can make a world of difference. During our day-to-day life we hardly have the time to settle down for a few minutes. That means irregular breathing. Allowing our body some time to actually stay calm and carry on the processes quietly can make a significant difference to how our body performs. With more fresh air in our lungs the heart performs at its best and our body feels rejuvenated.

Watching Your Thoughts
This is one of the tougher practices of meditation. Though physically not that demanding, it is an emotional challenge. The idea is to clear your mind of any thoughts and just let it be. You can sit in the normal upright posture and with your legs crossed. But the trick is to let go of your mind, because, at least initially, the more you will try this, the harder will it get.

Walking Meditation
One of the more innovative versions of meditation, this not only helps you at the level of the mind but you also get some exercise as you pace up and down. You can practice this in a room or outdoors, as long as there are no distractions. Don’t try it in a room where the television is on or in a park with children playing. Again the process is to maintain a relatively brisk pace as you focus on your breathing and walking. Concentrate only on these two things and let go of your other concerns. Staying focused here is the real challenge.

Meditating While Chanting

This is a good style of meditation for the beginners. It has often been a problem for the ones who are starting off on meditation to actually stay focused and not let thoughts wander into their heads. Chanting a mantra can be of much help for them. This helps to keep away other thoughts and lets you focus more. The chant should be chosen carefully so that it is easy for you to remember and say. You need not say it aloud and can just repeat it in your head. As long as you are able to stay focused you know it is working right for you.
